Is there a difference between Hemp CBD and Cannabis CBD?

As CBD becomes increasingly popular, so does the amount of products claiming to deliver the benefits of this substance? However, there is a lot of confusion when it comes to CBD that is derived from hemp or cannabis. In short, CBD is derived from different varieties of the cannabis sativa plant. This article will explain the differences and similarities between hemp derived CBD and cannabis derived CBD.

What is hemp?

Hemp is the variety of C. sativa that contains less than 0.3 percent THC.  Hemp can be grown legally across most of the United States excluding three states. Hemp plants do contain THC but at such low levels that it is considered insignificant. Hemp has been grown for years and has been used to produce goods such as rope, clothes, and much more. In fact, Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, grew hemp himself.

What is cannabis?

There are three standard strains of cannabis plants.  These include c. indica, c. sativa, and c. ruderalis.  Cannabis contains varying and much higher THC levels than hemp plants. These plants also contain less CBD than hemp.

So what’s the big deal?

Currently, CBD derived from the hemp plant is legal at the federal level but still illegal under some state laws. CBD derived from cannabis however is illegal under federal law but is allowed under certain state laws. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also not approved any non-prescription use of CBD thus far.

In short, hemp contains more CBD and less THC.  Cannabis contains more THC and less CBD. The benefits from CBD are not affected whether it is derived from hemp or cannabis. The majority of CBD products are made from hemp-derived CBD.  If you are considering using any products containing CBD, it is important to consult with your doctor and make sure there will not be any interactions with medications you are currently taking.
